I don't know where they came from........but when I was studying astronomy in college
(circa 1961, in the days of the Steady State Theory), the letters were: OBAFGKMRNS
(Oh Be A Fine Girl, Kiss Me Right Now -- Smack!).....

The basic mnenomic for stellar types.

I was telling a woman about this today, and she wanted to know why the stellar types have the letters they do.

  I was stumped.

Anyone know how the types of stars were assigned their letters?
