Loaner binoculars might be very useful, even cheap ones, for people
who were just learning the sky or who had limited opportunity to haul
out and set up something fancier.
For serious beginner telescopes, I usually recommend Dobsons near 8-
inch,
or perhaps small (80 - 100 mm) refractors for folks who are timid about
fussing with mechanical adjustments.
8-inch SCTs might also be viable as loaners, but they are more expensive
and perhaps harder for beginners to get used to.
