I live just off of Summit Road. Winds have definitely shifted to bring the smoke north and west of the original fire. The smoke this morning was so think that it was like being in a fog bank. The middle school up there (CT English) is closed due to the air quality. The good news is that the fire containment increased quite a bit last night, and it does not look like the fire has grown much since mid afternoon yesterday. If the wind patterns hold through the weekend, well, at least the sunsets will be dramatic in much of the Bay Area...

Subject: [TAC] Smoky skies for this w/e?
On the 11pm news last night I saw a satellite photo showing the smoke plume from the Summit Fire near Corralitos extending due south and just to the west of the Monterey Peninsula running south some 350+ miles! There was no discernable effect in Cupertino - no smoke, no smell, clear skies.
It seems the winds have shifted... This morning I woke up to obscured skies and a VERY strong smell of smoke!
Turning this to the topic of observing, is there someone down in the Monterey or Salinas areas that can give us an idea of what it looks like now down there and prognosticate for tomorrow night's observing at Fremont Peak? Peter? Jamie?
