Thanks for the tip, and to everybody else who responded - things blew up at work (non-literally) and I flaked.
In the end I ordered a cheap one off eBay on the basis that if it was a piece of junk then it was only a $12 piece of junk. Besides, at the moment, with all the dust in the air I really only need a red laser pointer to point at stars :)
One previous reply mentioned the lack of an IR filter in many of these cheap pointers. In fact the 20mw model I was looking at explicitly mentions the lack of a IR filter, but I was not aware the cheaper ones suffered the same issue. I'll need to give the cheap one the cameraphone test to see if it has effective IR filtering or not when it arrives.
Of course we could just bring a whole pile of GLPs to GSSP and have a laser shootout! (JOKING!).
