Thanks, everyone, for all your advice. It seems like the opinions
are pretty unanimous - an XT10 with a FirstBase is a great
choice. The next time I have a moment I'll run over to the Orion
shop and take a look at one in person to make sure the dimensions are OK.
Thanks also for the recommendation of the folding chair. I have a
variable-height observing chair, but I'm not all that happy with
it. First, one of the welds broke the first time I used it and I'm
constantly afraid it's going to break again, and second it has to be
taken apart to pack.
Michelle, I truly appreciate your offer to help me build my own, and
perhaps some day I will. I'd actually already signed up for an
intro-to-woodworking class at the Sawdust later this summer. Right
now, though, life is waaay too busy - in between my "day" job, I'm
doing my MS in Astronomy from Swinburne and working at SETI for the
summer! (This whole astronomy thing has sort of taken over my life
- except that I never have time to look at the sky anymore)
