IR:Backyard /Castro Valley - Sat March 1, 2008

It started out a bit dicey last night in castro valley but after it got dark
it cleared up, but there was a fair amount of wind

the wind finally dropped around 8:30 or so and I was able to shoot several
galaxy images which I have posted already

It was one of those nights that I was happy I didn't drive anywhere: things
were just fine in the backyard

the wind was whipping the 18" around quite a bit the first two hours of dark
but the seeing was actually pretty good. Once the wind subsided, I was
getting decent tracking and reasonably tight stars.

It is fun imaging galaxies with no filter. It is sort of like starting over:
I may have near-encyclopedic knowledge of nebulae after more or less imaging
them exclusively for so many years but the galaxies are pretty much a big
unknown playpen for me: sitll learning the good ones to image.

What I do know is that this is galaxy season and nebulae are not so
available right now and for the next couple of months.
