I cleaned the filthy mirror in my old coulter with dilute lukewarm water
with some Dawn(tm), and flowing water, sloshing it very gently with a
very soft old tshirt loose bunch that was drenched in said soapy water,
then putting it on a clean towel outside in the shade, braced at a 45
degree angle, and flowing a few ounces of hardware store acetone over it
to remove the water. even better would have been semiconductor grade
methanol, but I didn't have access to this. all waste acetone was
absorbed the towels under the mirror and eventually evaporated.
anyways, the acetone sheeted over the glass nicely, and ran off leaving
no residue. i used a corner of a rag to help the last drop of acetone
off the bottom edge of the mirror before it fully evaporated.
it removed the binder ring sticker, in fact, I had to use a little more
acetone to remove the rest of the glue as it ran and left a streak.
The glass and surface was in great shape after this, but this old mirror
was missing almost half its aluminization in patches (the mirror had
black oxidized areas before my treatment), in fact I did this cleaning
in preparation before sending it to Bob Fies for recoating, which cost a
grand total of $52 including the fee for stripping the old aluminum in
ferric chloride pc board etchant..
anyways, this might be a less toxic way of cleaning. After I was done
and had put the mirror away, rather than let all the acetone evaporate,
heh, I lit the main towel stack on fire ... it burns very quickly with a
very low temperature flame on the rag, the rag didn't even get
singed. when it was almost all burned off, I put it out with a wet
rag and spread out the rag pile to thoroughly dry. I figured the
combustion byproducts (co2, h2o) were probably less harmful than the raw
acetone in the atmosphere.
