oh geezus. don't get me started, it pisses me off. years of
memories of scout 'night hikes' where the damn buggers insisting on
carry 5-D maglights and flashing them all over the place. to even
SUGGEST that the troop stops for a moment, quiets down and kills the
lights and listens to the sounds of the forest, or sees the stars is
generally futile. the one time I got a smaller group to do that (in the
middle of henry cowell state park), the results /were/ rather amazing,
we heard owls, deer, a nightingale or something, etc. the magic lasted
about 5 minutes and then the noise and light cranked back up. a couple
of the dads thanked me for suggesting it, so it was all worth while.
