If you were there on the 13th, then my Starry Night planetarium program on
my Mac shows on August 13th: the moon was a waxing gibbous setting at 3:01
am and the sun rose at 6:24 am. So, there was no moon above the true
horizon at 4:40 am on that date and you were only 90 minutes from sunrise i=
n
astronomical dawn. Was there a fair amount of moisture or marine layer
above and/or residual smoke for the areašs forest fires still around? This
location is more of a gamble with air transparency than the more stable
inland locations because if its proximity to the cold Pacific. Išve heard
on a recent radio program that the Pacific has been warmer than usual the
past two years adding more moisture to our regional air as it passes
easterly. Over the past two summer seasons observing up at Fremont Peak,
Išve notice the transparency in the nighttime sky has not been as good as i=
t
was 5-10 years ago, especially during the nineties. Wešre definitely in
another weather pattern since the last millennium.

I was camping at Pfeiffer Big Sur SP about two weeks ago when the moon
was a couple days shy of full. Right around the end of astronomical
twilight 440AM, the moon was less than 5 degrees above the horizon
behind some hills rising about 20 degrees up. The sky was dark but not
ink black. The milky way was barely visible and the LM estimate would be
maybe 5.5. M31 was near the zenith but invisible to naked eye. I know
how a dark sky looks after being at Adin and this was nowhere close. It
was maybe a Montebello night. I don't know what killed the conditions.
Maybe fog?
