>It's a star party, not a family 'general vacation - play around all day'
>camping trip. Up all night, sleep during the day. A Star Party. Quiet is a
>necessity.
>(and rarely enforced)
That is not the opinion of the San Jose Astronomical Association (the
sponsor).
SJAA structures CalStar to be friendly to families and other observers that
are less experienced. That is the purpose of separating the site into casual
and dark enforced areas.
Expectations are different in the different areas of the site. If you have
not visited CalStar before you are strongly urged to read
http://www.sjaa.net/calstar/info.html
There is a quiet period and every attendee, adult and child, is expected to
comply with it. If parents bring children, particularly younger children,
they are strongly urged to use the casual area. The casual area is much
larger this year so there is no excuse for setting up in the more densely
camped areas.
I have had the misfortunate at several star parties of setting up next to a
family where the kids were yelling at sunrise and the father was yelling at
the kids 24/7. Such a family unit should not camp in the dark area.
Oh and I bring earplugs plus the ear protection I use when running a saw.
