Dear Friends:
Don't forget that this weekend will be the next opposition of
Mars. As usual, the Foothill Observatory will be open Friday, Nov. 4
at 9PM assuming the weather cooperates. I may be there also with my
5" AP refractor.
Also there is a public observing opportunity at the College of
San Mateo just off Hwy 92 this Saturday Night, Nov. 5. More on this
below. I will also be bringing my 5" AP refractor there as well.
For those with a yen for bigger telescopes, don't forget that
the Chabot Space and Science Center in Oakland will have its HUGE
telescopes trained on the Red Planet as well Friday and Saturday
nights at least. Directions to Chabot is on their web site at: http://

College of San Mateo is at 1700 West Hillsdale Blvd in San Mateo. Take
Hwy 92 to West Hillsdale Blvd, exit and go a half-mile uphill, then to
the right at the large stone sign by the main entrance. Immediately,
turn right again onto the service road, and proceed down through a gully
and up the other side. Once out of the gully, you'll see the Library, a
two-story glassed-in building on your left, and a grassy field on your
right. Continue past the field until the the road levels, looking right
for Parking Lot 19. Park and cross the road toward Bldg. 10 (marked),
and climb the outside steps between it and Bldg. 11. You may also park
in Lot 20A, 100 yards further on the left. If parking there, pass Bldg.
12 and climb the steps by Bldg. 11. Atop either set of steps, the
planetarium will be a round, domed building obscured by trees, centered
in the quad among buildings 10, 11 and 12. Maps and directions can
also be found at the CSM & SMCAS web sites:
