It's worse than you think (though I kind of like your last suggestion):
wherewithal. Note the final singular 'l'. No hyphens; it's a "word."
        Though it now means "have the means to" or "have the baksheesh" it
originally was more or less synonymous with "how." (We'd say "how will I
ever pay off my astronomy debts?" but Shakespeare would have said
"wherewithal shall I pay off my stationer?") This is much the same
linguistic drift as "wherefore" (which used to mean "Why?". "Wherefore art
thou Juliet" doesn't mean where are you, my littl chickadee. And it's kind
of weird in that he meant "wherefore art thou Capulet?" but art is art...)
        Okay, back to astronomy.
