It can be dusty and some people don't go because of that. I use a desert storm cover to protect it from dust and rain. It is a small price to pay for what are perhaps the darkest skies in the country.
I made it to El Paso this evening. Tomorrow I'll be meeting a friend at Fort Davis and we'll camp at the park. If you are staying at the park the rangers let up go up to the top of the mountain to observe at night, so we'll be starting our observing a day early.

TSP often has a big problem with dust. It may not be so dusty this
year but it would be a good idea to be able to cover anything bothered
by dust. It would also be a good idea for some form of rain protection.
After going to TSP a few times a friend felt the best way to handle TSP
is to not bring his scope but to hang out and borrow photons.

Well, I am hitting the road for TSP in about 15 minutes--after rush hour subsides a little. I had forgotten how full my SUV gets when I pile everything in there. The nice thing is that I have packed so much "astrostuff" in there that there is no chance that anything could have been left behind...wouldn't want that. Here is the inventory, at least the large items:
1. LX200GPS OTA & Tripod
2. Meade Superwedge
3. Orion 120ST & Tripod
4. William Optics Zenithstar 80mm & tripod
5. Meade 60mm refractor (el cheapo version) & camera Tripos
6. Binos
7. Losmandy Rings (various sizes)
8. Roll up tables (2)
9. Folding Chair
10. Obsering Chair
11. Nikon 35mm Camera & various lenses
12. Meade Deep Sky Imager Pro
13. Jump Start Battery (no, not for the SUV, for the scopes)
14. Laptop
15. Large Duffle Bage full of clothes
16. Smaller Travel bag
17. Cooler full of ... well, we won't discuss what is in the cooler
On top of all this I have a myriad of boxes filled with other "astrostuff" too numerous to mention.
Man, I wonder if 7 nights at the Prude Ranch in Fort Davis is enough time to use all this stuff! Actually, my plan is to do astrophotography and only use the otehr items as time permits. Some of the items are new (Meade DSI Pro) and I want to try them out in TX simply because I am going to be there. Having never done any CCD imaging before, I probably won't spend a whole lot of time with it unless it is very intuitive.
Well, it is about time to it the road. This year they are going to set up a wireless network. They have said that before. If they succeed this year, I'll post updates during the week...maybe even a few pictures if I can find a way to put them on the web.
Later,
Bill Drelling
