I recently provided a telescope for the Sky&Telescope/TravelQuest trip to
Costa Rica. I shipped the "Uti" 8-inch Newtonian in a Pelican 1650 case
with the mirror left in. The case was then packed in an outer cardboard
box (with a little bit of foam) and shipped via UPS Ground to Arizona. For
the trip itself, the case was taken out of the box and checked aboard a
flight to Costa Rica. The same procedures were followed on the return trip.

The person carrying the telescope to Costa Rica encountered no problems
with the inspectors or with baggage check-in. The scope (including
eyepieces and other accessories) made the round-trip journey just fine.
The outer box was a little worse for the wear when it arrived back here,
but there was no damage to the optics or accessories, whatsoever.

I've got a 10-inch SCT coming back from Tucson this week. It's going to be
interesting to see how well the collimation held up!

Clear skies,
