Of course it isn't aperture but rather exit pupil that matters. I know you
know that, but just as an example of what I mean: we did lunar observing
on the Mt. Wilson 60" without a filter, but with adequate magnification to
keep the brightness manageable. Also, it helped to leave the interior dome
lights on.
