On Sunday morning, we went from uncomfortable to concerned to
action-stations in about two hours. It's sometimes difficult to know how
to respond, you don't want to be ridiculously over-cautious, but you also
don't want to be in denial. So about noon on Sunday, we decided to
prepare so that we wouldn't have to leave any precious item behind. As it
turned out, the fire never got closer than about four miles, but we were
mighty concerned for a while.
It's interesting that we put hardly a thought into what to take along,
our priorities were obvious, no questions. Photos were number one, isn't
that funny? Then a few days' clothing. I put the entire filing cabinet in
the van and my computer's CPU (we use Quicken and I haven't backed up to
CD-R in a while). June grabbed her jewelry case. Our girls grabbed
photos, plush animals, mementos. I think the last thing I put in was my
recently acquired AP 130EDF.
So what would you grab if you had 20 minutes to evacuate? Five minutes?
It makes for interesting contemplation.
Cheers,
Paul Sterngold
