Thanks for asking. AFAIK, all members of TAC-South and our homes are okay
so far. We've been communicating among ourselves on the TAC-South list.
A good-sized group was out observing and imaging this past Saturday night
at LBV in Anza-Borrego. There was a fire to the SSE of us, you could see
plumes of smoke rising and occasionally orange reflections off the base
of the cloud. But I certainly had no clue as to the tragedy beginning
west of us until I was driving back on Sunday morning. The air was still
clear enough that the huge columns of black smoke and westward-running
plumes were clearly visible and dramatic. We were lucky to get back, as
road closures were already underway. We drove near or through Julian,
Valley Center, Ramona- all the towns currently under siege.
June just told me that there has been yet another tragedy, a group of
firefighers were trapped, one has lost his life, another is in critical
condition, and two more are injured. :-( We work so hard to bring order
to our lives, sometimes we forget the awesome, chaotic power of nature
and the precariousness of our fingerhold at the edge of the abyss.
Cheers,
Paul Sterngold
