The Palomar Observatory has taken precautions against such a scenario such as the current fires. I just read their press release in which they state that they have a million gallon water tank in reserve, a squad of volunteer fire fighters and have been working with the forest service to remove dead debris to lower the possibility of a worst case scenario. Also, the dome itself has been constructed with a double concrete foundation and walls and if I understand correctly, the steel housing (the dome itself) is also a double construction.
Let's hope that these precautions help the Palomar Observatory avoid the same fate as the Aussie observatory earlier this year.
