A (probably unfair) observation I've made when in Britain on business trips
is that most consumer goods cost about the same number (in pounds) as I'd
expect to pay here in the US (in dollars). Books often cost even more -
unless it's a book first published over there that I don't want to wait
for (the latest Terry Pratchett, or the first few Harry Potter books before
they moved up the US schedule), I won't bother to buy.
I didn't look for telescopes, but consumer electronics prices sent me into
shock. This has got to rank right after the weather among the reasons why
