Meteor showers reported over parts of north and central California
Thursday, July 10, 2003
AP Breaking News
(07-10) 02:06 PDT LOS ANGELES (AP) --
Four separate meteor showers were visible over parts of northern and
central California with reports of white, blue and red streaks in the sky,
authorities said.
The meteor showers occurred at around 10 p.m. Wednesday, said Greg Renick,
a spokesman for the state Office of Emergency Services.
Renick said the odd-colored streaks were visible from "several counties"
-- as far north as Calaveras and Santa Barbara in the south. He said he
didn't know why there would be red streaks in a meteor shower.
A spokesman said the Federal Emergency Management Agency had no
information about Wednesday's sightings but said meteor showers were
expected over the next several days.

Interesting to note that one meteor according to the paper is enough for
a meteor shower. I have not heard of any reports of additional meteors,
although Jeff said it did break up. There is a high probability that this
meteor became a meteorite! I'll post more looking for details later.
