This is an interesting thread, but you seem to have overlooked one
source:
If you venture to your nearby dive shop, you can procure there, for
many more dollars than you'd probably like to spend, lead or
non-threatening weights used to help divers maintain neutral buoyancy
in the water. They come in a variety of shapes, some encased in vinyl
or epoxy, in bean-bag form ($$, but convenient), or bare metal (which
could be painted if so desired).
Better still, divers are getting in and out of the hobby all the time -
you can probably get some used ones for a reasonable price. But try to
find a local source - shipping would be murderous!
I'm quite certain you could find something that would attach with
velcro or nylon webbing to your OTA or by other means to your mount
without breaking the bank (or the telescope).
