Yeah, that's Jim Pombo, a far conservative Republican from Tracy. He
wants desperately to develop prime farmland (much of it his own) in the
Central Valley for large tracts of homes, and will do almost anything in
Congress to try to make it happen - he is his own favorite special
interest. No matter where you are on the political spectrum, it is very
difficult to agree with this line of thought. Most of the conservatives I
know are not wild about this idea. I seriously doubt that it will come to
anything - the financial and political costs would be enormous, and the
environmental constraints are gargantuan.
It sounds scary, but at this moment, I'd not be too worried.
