I was preparing to defend a patent disclosure before our patent review
committee at Motorola when I heard from one of my associates that his wife
had just called with the news. This was a day like when John Kennedy was
assassinated: I will never forget where I was and what I was doing. In the
latter case, I was in 4th grade and had just returned from lunch and our
teacher was reading to us. One of the 5th grade teachers came into the room
and announced that President Kennedy had been shot. She was in tears. We
were all so young we didn't know how to react.
