you could probably carry a pretty good sized mirrorbox and top cell if
you had a roof rack and box.
however, perhaps you'd be better trading the newbeetle in on a Golf
hatchback or Jetta wagon. maybe not as cute as the Beetle but way more
space on the exact same platform. with the back seat folded a golf
would probably carry a 18" obsession style scope. a jetta wagon could
carry a large fixed tube dobson.
