I second the suggestion that a 6" Dobsonian from Orion
is a great starter scope. I am just finishing my first
year of observing and have come to the same conclusion.
As much as I like my 8" Newtonian on an equatorial mount,
a 6" Dobsonian is much easier to use and transport and
is great for a beginner.
And remember to budget for a Telrad and a better finder scope!
They will greatly heighten your viewing experience.
