    I second the suggestion that a 6" Dobsonian from Orion
    is a great starter scope. I am just finishing my first
    year of observing and have come to the same conclusion.
    As much as I like my 8" Newtonian on an equatorial mount,
    a 6" Dobsonian is much easier to use and transport and
    is great for a beginner.

    And remember to budget for a Telrad and a better finder scope!
    They will greatly heighten your viewing experience.
