      There's always the possiblity of creating a special helmet that
      contains high-intensity lights that shine into your eyes, but are
      shielded from the eyes of other observers in the vicinity. By
      thereby destroying your own dark adaptation, the amount of light
      penetrating the red acrylic will be reduced in apparent level to
      the point at which it is no longer objectionable.
      
      Alternatively, and similarly, you might only use your laptop when
      the Moon is up. Or when it is daylight!
