Saturday night pastWell it may be unambiguous to you but when I read the clouds were centered along the range, I felt a reasonable interpretation could mean in a "vertical" sense: ie, the clouds were part way up the hills meaning that the top could be above it all.
If one is at sea level and it is overcast all over, then that could mean the marine layer is covering the ground. The comment about being wet underfoot might mean that "it is wet out there but the viewing could be good as a consolation".
And what really confused me was the comment about Felix being rarin' to go. Hell I thought in my disoriented haze (just flew in from Japan that morning) that "ol' Jamie" was headed out to the peak. Damn, I nearly jumped into Kermit to hightail it up to the peak. And being a last minute thing chances are that I would have simply gone visual (how about that for a change?) as to get their quickly, Kermit would have to be the transporter of choice and not much besides a TV101/Gibraltar will fit into The Frog.
The really ironic thing is that it did clear up nicely on Sat night in lovely Castro Valley and we had a totally cloudless sunrise Sunday morning. And to add injury to insult, my trusty AP1200GTO is setup, aligned and covered in the clear-northern-view backyard of the CVDC so I could have attached the C14/CCD camera and gone for it.
Oh well I really needed the sleep after all as evidenced by my completely missing the point. Of course I am always unsure of these new usages of words such as Bad meaning Good and Gnarly meaning either bad or good. Anyway I am happy you clarified the message buried in the post.
Gotta watch those words that can have diametrically opposite meanings, Jamie. Of course being a speech pathologist doesn't really imply any extraordinary vocabulary skills but I would assume they generally go hand in hand; and certainly so in your case. But I guess one could be able to pronounce the words just fine and not know what they mean. Which reminds me of a story by Dave Barry about his attempt to carry on an English conversation with a store clerk in Tokyo. He tried hard to communicate, the pin on the clerk said "I speak English" but he finally realized that the pin's declaration did not mean the clerk UNDERSTOOD English, he merely spoke it. Talk about splitting hairs....

Even on careful re-reading that sure is unambiguous. Whichever meaning of gnarly you prefer, the negative one takes the prize here. In the evening from the north of town we could see the bottom of the Peak, with the top shrouded in rainclouds.
This next weekend is a big Scout camporee right in Toro Park, just outside of Salinas, a lovely little valley under Mt Toro (which is higher than the Peak but with no roads). So if there's any kind of decent weather, we'll take the scopes along to show off some of the sights.
