The molds used to make the mirrors were made by Caroline Herschel,
William's sister. . She pounded manure to make the molds and then
ground and polished the mirrors. Two mirrors were made for each
telescope, so one could always be ready for observing, while the other
was being repolished.
Caroline set the observing targets for each nights run. Then she
recorded William's observations, performed the calculations, copied the
drawings and prepared the papers for publication. And discovered a dozen
lovely objects which are included in Herschel's lists.
