Richard and Richard and Jane, the kind of stars you're talking about
are luminous blue variables, strange wonderful things. James Kaler
gives 'em extra attention in that marvelous book Extreme Stars.
Examples of LBV's are eta Carinae, P Cygni, rho Cas and the Pistol
Star of HST fame. S Doradus in the LMC is one of these, 8th magnitude
to us here at 160,000 ly away. Phew.
There are even some LBV's that Sandage and Hubble found in M33, 16th
magnitude at some 2.5 million ly's from here.
