    *** WARNING - "Un" Safety Advisory *** :-)

NAASB (the National Amateur Astronomers Safety Board) has issued an "un"safety advisory regarding observing chairs.

NAASB has reports of several incidents of injury from the following:
    * collapse of chair when adjusting telescopes to high altitude angles
    * injury to buttocks ("numb rear") / deep thrombosis risk from perching on the seat for long stretches in cold weather
    * sliding off chair after slick insect repellent has been applied.

In addition, NAASB has found a high corrolation between injuries from observing chairs and consumption of alcoholic beverages. Many astronomers are injured every year falling off chairs while reaching for beverages when rare deep sky objects are viewed through telescopes.

NAASB advises all astronomers to immediately change their observing chair procedures by
    * installing mounting devices on hydrolic-assisted "easy" chairs with large armrests to prevent "fall out" injuries - straps and seatbelts may also be installed
    * installing beverage cup dispensors on all telescope mounts within easy reach
    * limiting the amount of deep sky observing sitting - very tall ladders are highly recommended.

NAASB wishes you a safe and sane evening. Remember - a safe observing chair is an easy chair.

    Lynne.
