Dinosaur Point Observing Site

Use Policy:

Site is behind locked gate and access is only on announced nights. A Gatekeeper must make reservation, be present at all times, and escort observers through the gate.

Site Description:

Dinosaur Point is located on the shore of the San Luis Reservoir approximately 25 miles east of Gilroy, CA. The observing area is a large paved parking lot near the boat ramp. The area has chemical toilets, a pay phone, potable water, barbecue grills, and picnic tables.

Dinosaur Point is primarily a winter observing site. Very high winds are typical during April - September. Toll free wind/weather number at San Luis Reservoir: 800 805-4805.

Directions:

From San Jose, drive south on highway 101 to the highway 152 east turnoff in Gilroy. Follow 152 toward Casa de Fruta. Be sure not turn west toward Hollister. 152 east traverses a valley floor for several miles, then climbs to Pacheco Pass. Exit the highway at Dinosaur Point turnoff (south side of the highway) just past Pacheco Pass. Drive past Pacheco State Park a few miles down to the parking lot at lake level.

General rules for using Dinosaur Point:

  1. Access to Dinosaur Point after dark is by reservation only. The gate is locked and can be opened only by the designated Gatekeepers.
  2. Only Gatekeepers can call the rangers and make reservations.
  3. Do not go to Dinosaur Point unless a Gatekeeper has clearly announced his arrival and departure times.
  4. At least one Gatekeeper must always be present.
  5. Everyone must be escorted out by a Gatekeeper.
  6. Observers are not allowed to stay overnight unless accompanied by a Gatekeeper.
  7. Observers must arrive before sunset.
  8. Locate the Gatekeeper(s) and introduce yourself when you arrive. All Gatekeepers will have a sign identifying themselves posted on their windshields. Confirm your departure time.
  9. Be prepared to leave on time or wait for the next scheduled escort to the gate. When you are ready to leave, proceed to the SW corner of the parking lot and wait there. At the scheduled time, a Gatekeeper will escort you out.
  10. Leave the park as you found it. Make sure your area is clean.
  11. Absolutely no boats allowed in the parking lot after dark.
  12. No overnight camping.
  13. Do not call the emergency number posted on the gate unless you are reporting an emergency. The ranger you get out of bed won't arrive for over an hour. Get a Gatekeeper to escort you out.
  14. If you bring guests, you must ensure that they follow all these rules and procedures.
