Title: Leo Triple with Tidal Tail and Dwarf Galaxy
Post by: jeffweiss9 on April 22, 2015, 10:10:51 PM
Latest image is of both the NGC3628 tidal tail and the recently discovered tidal dwarf galaxy (TDG) at its very tip.

The following link compares the discovery image of the Tidal Dwarf Galaxy (TDG) discovered by Nikiel-Wrocynski et al. in 2014
with a registered crop of my "Leo Triple with Tidal Tail and Dwarf Galaxy" (above):

I posted this here after the interesting presentation by Delgrado on amateur participation (K. Crawford et al.) in professional studies on colliding galaxy tidal streams at this year's AIC.  A TDG is a dwarf galaxy that is actually made of the tidal stream stellar 'debris'.

Cheers,
Jeff

In an interesting turn of events, I have been working with two of the authors of the Leo TDG discovery paper on some interesting aspects of this tidal stream image.  They are using my (linear-stage) data and seem to have found it useful.   I haven't done any real science in my astrophotography before (that's my day job) but find it rather exciting even if it doesn't end up being a discovery.

Congratulations Jeff to have your photo featured on S&T's website!  It's really beautiful.

...Actually this image was published in the March 2016 Sky and Telescope magazine.
See the article entitled "The Spiral Arms of Spring".   But they actually clipped out the most interesting part (to me anyway) which is the long tidal tail which contains the 2014 discovered Leo Tidal Dwarf Galaxy (TDG) located near the tip of the tail.
Cheers,
Jeff
