Title: Dinosaur Point is on again for the fall and winter
Post by: DDK on October 05, 2017, 03:28:05 PM
Just, I mean just, got a prompt email reply from Ranger Nathan at Five Rivers. Our lock is intact on the gate, yes.

New Moon in October is nicely cooperative, being on Thursday the 19th. The weekend before and after both have friendly moontimes. So weather permitting, we'll be opening up the lot for stargazing. I'm figuring on being there both Saturdays, or Sundays if that works better.

Watch the OI page for announcements, well ahead of the nights we'll be there. Also, if you want to observe at Dinosaur Point on a night that isn't mentioned, send an email to <DinoGatekeepers@yahoogroups.com> and we'll see if a Gatekeeper can make it that night.

Check out the Observing Sites page for Dino for details. It's current. <http://observers.org/index.php/topic,29.0.html>
And do remember you have to get there well before sundown to get in.

Your devoted site liaison,
Jamie

Sure thing, Marko. Serious thanks to Albert for turning us onto Dinosaur Point in the first place, and for the mondo work he put in over years and changes to keep our access there. It's a fine observing spot, as you know.

Can’t do the 14th, but would like to venture out on the 21st.

Hi,

Any idea how Dinosaur Point, Pinnacles or other sites in the general area are likely to be affected by the fires in the North Bay? I have been observing at Lake Sonoma but right now I imagine that site is likely to be very affected by the terrible fires. Any thoughts about sites in the south? Thanks.

Probably the further south one is the better.  I check this website for recent satellite imagery of fire smoke when planning an outing in fire season.  Click on the area you want to see then click on one of the image files.

And in the words of Canis Australis, Paul Lefevre, the only way to find out what the conditions are like on a hllltop is to go there and see.

And please do note the OI for Saturday night. Dinosaur Point will be open for observing, starting a new season.

What do people do when finished observing, given there is no overnight camping, just pack up and leave? Are there any good places to stay overnight not too far? It would be about a 3 hour drive home for me if I come. Thanks.

You're right, Smiley, we don't want to be there in the morning. But Casa de Fruta is right down the hill, you could bunk at Casa de Motel.

I drive home at 3-4am, but its only 1:30 or so for me to Santa Cruz.
