TAC Visual / out of area subscribers
« on: November 17, 2017, 11:52:56 AM »
I've been getting more and more signups from folks far out of the area.  latest one has a .in (india?) email and a .uk IP address, but filled in the 'scope' and 'interests' fields with reasonable values...

what think you all, should we open this group up to wider area participation?      It *is* quite possible they intend to visit here, etcetc.

yup, gonna be camping in Mojave Friday and Saturday, and star gazing, weather allowing, at the Black Canyon Group Camp near Hole in the Wall.

this is a test, only a test.  someone reported problems uploading images here.   I present a crappy crescent moon, probably shot with a DSLR at prime focus of a C80 (Vixen 80mm achromat) about 5 years ago...

awesome, ok.     i'm asking the club if they wanna do this.     I'm suggesting 2-3 scheduled exit windows, maybe 11pm for the wimps, 1am and I dunno, 3am ?   give folks a 30 minute reminder that if they wanna go its now or hours later...   its only 1:15 drive from central s'cruz.

if you post a dec 16 OI, I'll move this discussion over there...

Q: re dino.      you or another gatekeeper have to escort out people leaving...      if we had people who want to bail around midnight, would that be an issue?   I'm sure they'd be fine with knowing there's 1-2 scheduled 'exit parades' at preset times, but less happy if they thought they /had/ to stay til dawn or moonrise or whatever.

Jamie, FYI, I updated the Dino Pt  'site' page with the rules you posted a week or so back.   Please review it, and either edit or get back to me with any changes...

Jaime, looking forward at our SCAC calendar, I see we've not picked a location for Saturday December 16th, which yeah, I know is a ways off in the future, and the weather is extremely unpredictable at this point.

Any chance y'all will be doing another Dino Pt trip on that new moon night?   If so, I might just invite the SCAC members so inclined to show up, following all the rules etc etc.  Me and the 20" are going to miss both our two prior dates (non-astro committments including a play and a peter rowan concert), so I'll be jonesing for ancient photons by then.

What do people do when finished observing, given there is no overnight camping, just pack up and leave? Are there any good places to stay overnight not too far? It would be about a 3 hour drive home for me if I come. Thanks.

I drive home at 3-4am, but its only 1:30 or so for me to Santa Cruz.

yeah, its incredibly hazy and overcast here in santa cruz today, from the new Bear Fire that busted out last night above Boulder Creek.

looks like my rain forecast has both been downgraded and delayed some.   there likely WILL be some rain, but not as much as originally expected and a day or so later too.

with sunset at 6:20 or so, I don't *WANT* people showing up at 8pm, too many lights.

Some SCAC members will be going to Pinnacles West, in the parking lot by the visitors center, on Saturday the 21st.

day use fees (or national park pass) apply, and you must arrive before sunset as the gate auto locks, although it allows exiting all night long.

If anyone wants to join us, feel free, there's lots of room.    it might rain wed/thur but by saturday should be dry.

Charlie posted this video taken with a picture of drone footage and stills from CalStar 2017....

(The music volume is a bit high, so turn it down if that annoys you)

you can put a queen airbed and a couple chairs inside a shiftpod, with room to spare.

TAC Visual / Mt Unhumhum

I note that Mt Unumhum is finally open to the public as of Sunday, although it closes 30 minutes after sunset.     I wonder if anyone here has any contacts with the Midpeninsula Open Space District, and could approach them about doing occasional star parties up there?   Sure, its very exposed to the lights of San Jose, but it might be an interesting place to check out at night, anyways.
