This just in: New massive Vela supercluster discovered.
« on: November 23, 2016, 08:53:47 AM »
Here is the actual paper http://mnrasl.oxfordjournals.org/content/early/2016/11/08/mnrasl.slw229 describing the new discovery.  Its all over science news online - I first saw this in an AOL story.  Wait, AOL? :o

Some recessional speed - check it out!  Let's send Gottlieb back to the 48" to track this thing down.  Here's another article more for public/lay consumption - http://www.businessinsider.com/vela-galaxy-supercluster-discovered-2016-11.

At 800 million light years, this supercluster is both obscured and distant -- not a good combination for us amateurs.

On the other hand, the last galaxy featured in the observing report I posted today is at a distance of 860 million l.y. and it was quite easy in the 48-inch.

Yep.  And thus, the acronym "ZOA" :-)

But, if anyone could do it...

... if anyone could do it. Exactly. Actually, the two of you have been giving out dares to your buddies, to go find gnarly dim stuff, for years. You two oughta put on an eyeball shootout soon in Fort Davis.
