CalStar and the smoke from the Soberanes fire
« on: August 05, 2016, 02:41:58 PM »
I realize Calstar is still quite a ways off, but its directly in the path of the massive smoke from the Sobrantes fire now raging in Big Sur, at nearly 54000 acres burned as of this morning.  they are talking 100% 'containment' by the end of August, but that doesn't mean its dead cold and out, just that they've stopped it from advancing.

What happens to Calstar if the area is still under heavy smoke and haze?

SOBERANES fire.  This is at Dobermans Creek, south of Carmel, Garrapata State Park.

SOBERANES fire.  This is at Dobermans Creek, south of Carmel, Garrapata State Park.

thats where it started.  as of this AM, it was over 55000 acres, 87 square miles, and the smoke is all OVER south monterey county.  however, its now 40% controlled, so yeha, probably by the end of september, it will be history.

http://go.nasa.gov/2aKwBUB

you can move the slider at the bottom back day by day to see the view each day going back to July 22 when this fire broken out.    the red dots are satellite IR fire detection, thats where its burning the hottest.

LOL!!!  I just love autocorrect.  Doberman Creek 😋

I was just correcting the name of the fire, if anyone was going to look it up.  It's already changed my observing plans.  Hopefully it'll be out before CalStar, I'd expect it will be.

ohgeez, didn't even notice I'd misspelt it.   haha.   when we lived in Pacific Grove/Monterey in the 80s, we regularlly used to go down to Soberanes Point, and sit on that bench up on the saddle to watch the whales and/or sunset.

Question:  What to do if there is still a fire?
Answer:    I'll bring stuff for s'mores, somebody else bring shots.

the Chimney Fire (Lake Naciemento) is within 3 miles of Whisper Canyon now, 27000 acres and only 35% contained.

Current ETA for containment of the Soberanes Fire (Big Sur) is September 30th, now 85000 acres and 60% contained, but essentially burning out of control on the southern front deep in the Ventana Wilderness.

the latest map has the chimney fire within 4300' of Whisper Canyon.   There may not be a campground left.

Wow, what a complete waste.   To think some dork started it with a campfire.   Total shame.   Those Whisper Canyon owners are such nice people.  Total bummer.    I fear a close Astro Friend who has a house right there and hosts astro get togethers also is to loose his home today.    Total shame.

the Soberanes fire in Big Sur is the one started by a campfire.   Cause of the Chimney fire is as of yet unknown...   See http://www.fire.ca.gov/current_incidents/incidentdetails/Index/1389 for updates.
