CalStar registration is now open
« on: August 11, 2015, 11:57:00 PM »
Yep, you can sign up for CalStar right now. Go to
http://calstar.observers.org/
The links are very clear. Charlie Wicks, Richard Ozer and Jane Smith get credit for the setup.

10-13 September at Whisper Canyon, not far from Lake San Antonio.
Say it with me, very quietly, Whiiisssper Canyon.
Clear simple directions to the place are also on the website.

You might not want to dawdle. Unlike our overflow lot at Lake San Antonio, Whisper Canyon has a finite number of spots available.

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/calstar-announce/join
will continue to be ground central and first source for details.

Questions:

1. How many people will be allowed to register?
2. Where on the CalStar site map will the telescope field be located?
3. Where on the map do the tent campers set up?
4. Where would a car camper (one who sleeps in their vehicle, no tent) park?

Also, where will the "observer" (darkest, no lights) and "imaging" areas be located inside of the telescope setup area?  Will there be these areas or is the telescope setup area too small to do this?

Peter, lemme take a crack at your questions:
The limit I believe is set by Whisper Canyon, it won't be overcrowded. My memory is around 75 people.
Scopes can be set up anywhere a person likes. It's a huge area with plenty of clear level space. The area marked Playing Field will likely be a favorite.
A person can camp wherever they like. Find a handy spot with shade. Same for cars, park and sleep where you find a spot. Again, lots of room there. You can book a yurt, Genghis!
We won't be near enough organized to have imaging and observer areas. Get ahold of our good buddy Rob Hawley and see if you can get him to set up signs. Or of course you could take this on, Natscher.

About space at Whiisssper Canyon, Larry the guy there took us past the trees in the central area, and showed us this big ole area where he said anyone can set up. Open ground, easy access. So there is no lack of space; anyone who wants to get away from the middling madding crowd can do that.

There are only a couple of spots left! Signup now, or resign thyself to live sadly, with only the memories from others to while away the pain.

Robert Trower asked -
"Because we had to register for Cal Star this year is there a starting time for check-in."

And I dawdled to see if anyone else had an answer. Realistically, honestly, just come ahead. a) we can't expect hordes of crashers, and b) there's no way to set up an entry gate there anyway. The idea of a starting time for CalStar is still making my head spin a little.

It's a legitimate question. A simple yes or no would have sufficed. The first CalStar that ever took place you had to register for and they checked you in once you first arrived. Your sarcasam is uncalled for and not appropriate. I cringe to think how you speak to others in your lives if this is how you respond to someone you don't know. There will be no dawdling on my part as i say goodby TAC!

For the record, the first CalStar, in 2000, had no registration whatsoever. A bunch of us showed up on an agreed date, being all excited about this newly discovered spot, from the spring just before. There has never been a check-in nor prepay before.

And if Mr Trower is by any chance still on this forum, that wasn't sarcasm but silliness, in no way directed at you. Was intended to convey informality. If only Wicks hadn't completely outdawdled me.

Robert, there has been an ongoing (and very stupid) inside joke about Calstar and GSSP for years, and how they are opposite ends of the spectrum with respect to rules and level of organizing.  By no means was anything directed personally toward you, so please accept my apology if it came across that way.  Yes, we often cross the line in our sarcasm; and we deserve to be called out on it.

Richard, I belong to SJAA and when a question is posted (no matter how it is worded) it is answered so as not to make the person feel like it was a dumb question (that's how I felt). I want to thank you for your reply, it's helped me calm down.

The first CalStar was hosted by SJAA, it was sometime in the 90's. I remember it well because Mark Wagner came around with his clip board checking off names. The way the question was answered made me feel it was a dumb question. Richard's reply has calmed me down.

Just wondering if it is OK to show up a day early. Just like 4 nights under the Stars. Guess you could say I'm spoiled. I have registered and have booked one of the Full Hook Up Sites for me and my Trailer  :)

Paul, no early arrivals please. It's not a public park this year. It is reserved private property with specific dates for our event.

Question about on-site reservations:  Will any be accepted, assuming that there most likely will be some cancellations/no-shows?

Or is there any kind of waiting list, again assuming some cancellations?

Reason I ask:  My observing buddy missed the registration window (stupid, yes).

If the restriction on the total number of people is based on space, we have no problem sharing a tent.

thanks!

Steve

Any way I can be added to the wait list?  Had no idea it would fill up this quick.
Thanks,

How does one cancel a Calstar ticket and get reimbursed so that another on the waiting list can get a ticket?

As the forecast is looking horrible on Friday and Saturday, one cannot expect a refund. Thursday should be
good.... I have a ticket too. You never know what might happen with stargazing.

Looks like between weather and mechanical issues on camper, I will not make the great night on Thursday and later nights. The first person that replies to Charlie and me gets the ticket for 3 nights, if that is OK with Charlie. No cost if OK with Charlie. This is for one person. Let me know. But you better use it; we do not want it go to waste.

What's the horrible weather people are talking about for Fri/Sat? NWS says "Mostly Clear" Friday, same as Thursday. Clearskyclock doesn't look that far ahead.

What weather sites are you all looking at these days?

Driving directions to CalStar 2015
« Reply #30 on: September 10, 2015, 03:15:47 PM »
Hi all, I found driving directions on the Whisper Canyon website that are a bit clearer than the ones currently on the Calstar website.  Here they are:

Directions

From San Francisco Bay Area:

Take US 101 south to the Jolon Road/Ft. Hunter Liggett turn off. Follow Jolon Road to Lockwood (you will see a store) (23 miles). At the store, turn RIGHT onto Interlake Road. Follow Interlake Road to Bryson-Hesperia Road (8 ½ miles). Turn RIGHT onto Bryson-Hesperia Road. Stay on Bryson-Hesperia Road for about 3 miles. Turn LEFT at the T-intersection onto Hesperia Road. Stay on Hesperia Road for about 1 ½ miles. There is a sharp curve to the left where Hesperia Road turns into Smith Road (Stay on the paved road, don’t go straight onto the dirt road). Watch for the Whisper Canyon sign and turn RIGHT into the driveway (¾ mile). Please observe 10 mph speed limit to limit dust and erosion. Welcome to Whisper Canyon.

From Southern California:

Take US 101 to Paso Robles/Hwy 46 East off-ramp. Turn LEFT under the freeway and continue on 24th Street toward Lake Nacimiento (17 miles). Cross the Nacimiento Dam and continue on for 1 mile, then turn LEFT on Interlake Road. Continue on Interlake Road for 11 miles. Turn LEFT onto Bryson/Hesperia Road. Watch for the Whisper Canyon sign and turn RIGHT into the driveway ( ¾ mile). Please observe 10 mph speed limit to limit dust and erosion. Welcome to Whisper Canyon.

Note: Some GPS and mapping software is unreliable. It is best to use these directions.

Street Address
Whisper Canyon
