OR: Comet Lovejoy 7 Jan 2015
« on: January 07, 2015, 06:34:57 PM »
This past week or so, I've been following comet Lovejoy with 10 x 42 binos. This evening, I took another peek at 6:20PM. Its the brightest I've seen it. From outside of Mariposa, it is direct vision. I'm guessing it is brighter than mag 5. The head consists of a small, bright core surrounded by a large halo (the most asymmetric so far). In addition, its the first time I've spotted a tail. Its faint (averted vision), and spans about 1/4 the f.o.v. Skies are pretty. Might have to set up a telescope tomorrow for a quick session.
